February Favourites

february favourites

Happy March! February seemed so short and so long at the exact same time. I cannot describe it. There were lots of February favourites this past month. I tired lots of new products. Some I loved and some not so much. I’m excited to share with you the things that I loved! Read on to find out what my February favourites are.

February Favourites

H2Glow

Clove + Hallow sent me this hyaluronic acid serum with vitamins B3 and B5.  My skin gets so dry in the winter, especially around my chin. This serum has helped so much with my dry skin.

Everything Oil

This oil is amazing. I purchased this after seeing some before and after pictures online. This oil is a mixture of black cumin, squalene, organic rosehip, and argan oils that help with oil production, and moisturize skin and full of antioxidants.

Innersense Inner Peace Whipped Creme Texturizer

I love Innersense and many of their products have been in my favourites before. I actually bought this texturizer awhile ago when I bought Detox Market’s Innersense Box. There were like 5 full size products for about $60ish dollars. I finally decided to try it and I cannot believe how well my waves looks. On nights that I wash my hair, I add it and while my hair air drys the waves look the best they’ve been in a while. And on days that I don’t wash my hair, I am able to reform the waves with my fingers by adding a bit more!

Hydrafacials

A clean beauty boutique near me, London Beauty, has been offering $30 hydrafacials. This has been my first time getting a hydrafacial and I am obsessed. I’ve gone ever Sunday in February. My skin is looking so healthy and glowing. If you’ve never gotten one before, I highly recommend.

Search Party

Search Party is a TV show on HBO. Show is a satire on millennials obsession with true crime. I completely agree with that, as I love my true crime podcasts and shows like Dateline. The show is definitely a quick watch. I watched all 4 seasons in about 3.5 days.

Framing Britney Spears

I’m sure I’m not the only one who watched the Britney Spears documentary on Hulu. Just going back and seeing interviews with Britney when she was under 18 is shocking! The media definitely had everything to do with her breakdown in 2008. I feel so bad for everything she was put through with her father as well.

Verso Dark Spot Fix

The first time I went to London Beauty for a facial, I was given a sample of this dark spot treatment. As many of you know, I am dealing with hyperpigmentation on my face from when I was doing my candida detox. I noticed a difference on my face with just a week of use!

Is A Brand Is Greenwashing?

is a brand greenwashing

With sustainability and clean beauty becoming more popular, the amount of brands that greenwash are also rising. I first mentioned greenwashing in my sustainable fashion terms to know post. After that post, I had quite a few questions on brands that greenwash. The thing is though, we all might consider different things when it comes to sustainable fashion or clean beauty. Some of us might only care about what fabric is used but not how its processed or how it impacts the environment. People also have different views on clean beauty. I have done my best to compile tips on what to look for to tell if a brand is truly sustainable and clean.

What is Greenwashing?

Greenwashing is the use of marketing to portray a company as environmentally friendly when they are not. This has actually become a big concern since more and more companies are doing this and trying to benefit from sustainable and ethically made clothes. For beauty products, companies advertise as safe, non-toxic, eco-friendly and natural when they are not.

Aveeno is a great example as a brand that greenwashes. They use words like “high quality, natural ingredients” and “ingredients sourced from nature.” This all sounds great but Aveeno also uses ingredients like

  • Octinoxate
  • Oxybenzone
  • PEGs
  • Parabens
  • Petrolatum
  • Phenoxyethanol
  • Sodium laureth sulfate
  • Synthetic fragrance

Greenwashing is minimally regulated but falls under the Green Guides of the Federal Trade Commission, which monitors the truth in advertising. Deciding whether a brand is actually making strides to minimally impact the environment is completely up to the consumer. Responsible consumers need to research and look for red flags. Some of these red flags could be jargon that does not provide verifying claims and terms like

  • sustainable
  • socially responsible
  • eco-friendly
  • bioplastic
  • recycled content

While some of these terms are actually legitimate to some of these brands, they are often slapped on to a product or brand to convince shoppers they are good for the environment. Always research to find out what those terms mean to each company. Look for brands with detailed information on their site about their sustainability efforts and third-party, unbiased assessments, labels and awards. Some of these could be

  • Fairtrade
  • Safer Choice
  • GreenSeal
  • GreenGuard
  • SEAL
  • OEKO-TEX Standard
  • Global Organic Textile Standard
  • B Corporation

How to Spot Greenwashing?

1. Look for numbers

If you want to make sure what the brand is telling the truth about being sustainable and environmentally friendly, look at the figures and numbers they provide and explaining why this makes them sustainable.

2. Watch out for words

Brands try to use words like vegan, natural, conscious and green to make the consumer believe the products are good for the environment when they aren’t. H&M is one of these brands who uses green and conscious for their “Conscious” line. They still release 12-16 lines a year and only 1 is “sustainable” according to their terms. Yet they don’t provide any information on how they define organic and sustainable.

3. Research the factories and suppliers

Another way to see if a brand is being transparent is by looking at their suppliers and looking at the info provided. This is a common issue with brands by not doing enough compliance about their suppliers and relying on forced labour in their factories. That is why it’s important to look at the suppliers’ information and data is extremely crucial. Sites like Fair Wear Foundation and Worker Rights Consortium provide consumers with this data.

4. Do they want you to buy stuff you don’t need?

One of the biggest problems with the fashion industry is brands encouraging you to buy items you don’t really need because it is on trend and in style. If the brand keeps pushing products on you and you buy 5 sustainably made items you don’t need that’s not sustainable at all and actually a waste of resources. Brands like Patagonia, offer programs that repairs to old clothes so you can keep wearing them. Encouraging consumers to buy less is the most sustainable thing a brand can do.

In conclusion, you as a consumer need to pay attention and research what a brand is doing. Look for reports. One thing that I always do when looking up brands is going to their about page and see if they have anything on sustainability and what type of information they are providing me.

5 Hacks For Dry Winter Skin

5 Hacks For Dry Winter SkinI suffer from dry skin, sensitive skin. And when winter comes, my already dry skin becomes even more dry. I am always looking for ways to keep my skin as hydrated as possible. Today, I am sharing 5 hacks for dry winter skin to help boost hydration and radiance.

Dry Winter Skin Hacks

1. Drinks Plenty of Water

When it comes to drinking water, I am a literal fish. For everyone else’s 1 cup of water, I’m probably at least 4 cups in already (this number is probably higher). Drinking plenty of water not only helps with digestion but helps keep your skin hydrated and your body functioning.

2. Add a Hyaluronic Acid Serum

I recently added this hyaluronic acid serum*to my skincare routine and I’ve already noticed a difference. This serum is packed with hyaluronic acid, vitamin b3, b5, willow bark and licorice extracts for plump and hydrated skin.

3. Facial Oil

There is no reason to be afraid of facial oils, even if you have oily skin. Face oils help give your skin a boost of hydration and can also help balance your oil production. There are so many benefits for using facial oils on all different types of skin. Here’s my post on reasons to use facial oils. I love this brightening oil and this everything oil*.

4. Always Moisturize

Make sure you always moisturize both morning and night. I use a thicker one at night and a lighter one for during the day. Be sure to check out my clean beauty day moisturizers post.

5. Eat Foods That Nourish Your Skin

As someone you has had to detox for health issues, I’ve done my fair share of research to help with my skin. Healthy fats like flax, avocado, leafy greens and lots of fruits and vegetables will help benefit your skin and digestion! If you want to know the foods I eat, check out my quarantine grocery list.

January Favourites

january favourites

I cannot believe how fast January went by. Normally, January is one of the slowest months of the year but this year it was so fast. Maybe it was because of my surgery as well as still being in lockdown. I have so many January favourites to share with you. It’s been awhile since I’ve had so many monthly favourites. Lots of good products!

Kypris Deep Forest Clay Mask

For how much this mask costs, I really wanted to hate it but I can’t. This mask is amazing. I cannot believe how clear my skin looks after using it. It contains a cleansing clay, oceanic salt, soothing algae, botanical exfoliants, and a bunch of extracts from roots, trees, leaves, flowers and fruits. This mask costs a whopping $105. I purchased it because I had some Nordstrom gift cards. Still had to pay a lot for it but it’s worth every penny.

La Lumière Highlighter

This highlighter is from one of my favourite new clean beauty brands, La Bouche Rouge. It is enriched with hyaluronic acid that helps hydrate the skin for a healthy, luminous complexion.

La Terre Bronzer in Brune

Also from La Bouche Rouge, this bronzer also contains hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin for a radiant complexion all day long.

Ursa Major Brighten Up Vitamin C Serum

I got this serum back in December when Ulta had 20% off, including the prestige brands. This serum is amazing! I’ve definitely noticed a difference in my skin only using it a couple times a week.

Botanical B Enzyme Cleansing Oil

Also got this at Ulta with the 20% off. First, it smells amazing. I feel like I’m somewhere tropical. Second, it removes my makeup so well without stripping my skin.

Arrae Bloat

After my ear surgery, I was so bloated. I even did a juice cleanse which helped but was still bloated. Then I discovered Arrea. Their bloat pills work so well. My bloat went away within the hour of first taking them. I cannot express how much I love them. There are no fillers and just a few simple ingredients.

Love Your Life by Sophie Kinsella

I have been a fan of Sophie Kinsella since 2002 when I first read the Shopaholic books. Love Your Life is her newest book. It’s about Ava who goes to Italy for a book writing retreat where they don’t use their real names. This is where she meets “Dutch” and it’s basically love at first site. Of course, when they get back to London, they no longer have the magic of Italy and have to learn to deal with the quirks each other has.

What are your January favourites?

It’s so crazy to think that Valentine’s is a month away already. Since it is a month away, now is the time to start thinking about gifts. My sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts are perfect for both Valentine’s and Galentine’s Days. Personally, I love giving little gifts to my friends. Besides actual gifts, I’m sharing a few other ideas that will work especially if we are still in lockdown. And my guess is that we still will be in a month.
