With winter weather being very cold this year, your skin may not be feeling or looking its best and needs some TLC. Before I jump in on how to do a skin reset, let’s discuss some things to avoid. Alcohol is one of the biggest causes of inflammation and cutting it out can help the skin tremendously. The same thing can be said about your diet. Cut out the greasy and oil-filled food and eat more fruits and vegetables to ensure you get all the micro-nutrients your body and skin need.
Now that we discussed all of that, we can finally talk about how to do a skin reset the right way.
Ditch the Makeup
It’s our natural instinct to cover up our skin issues with makeup but in reality, it’s probably doing more harm than good. When it’s possible, the first step of the skin reset is to let your skin breathe. But if you need it for work or other social commitments go for it. But for day-to-day, your skin will thank you for going makeup-free. I work from home most days so I fully embrace the no makeup days. And on days when I just have some errands or nothing super important, I will just wear concealer, a little bit of blush and mascara just so my skin can still breathe.
Double Cleanse
I have talked about the importance of double cleansing in the past. If you’ve fallen off the wheel of the bandwagon to double cleaning, now is the perfect time to get back into it. Depending on your skin type, the first cleanse should be an oil-type cleanser used on dry skin to melt away makeup, sunscreen and grime. Your second cleanse can be a gel/foam/cream cleanser, depending on your skin’s needs, to get into the pores and clear out any excess oil, sebum or dirt. When doing both cleansers, your skin will be very clean and ready for your skincare!
Exfoliate
Clogged pores are one of the leading causes of problematic skin. Another key component of a skin reset is having a good exfoliating routine. But remember you don’t want to exfoliate too much because that could cause more harm than good. You want to find a formula that is gentle enough to not irritate whether it is a chemical or physical exfoliant, but effective enough to smooth, evenly tone and brighten the skin.
Masks
A skin reset cannot be complete without a little bit of R & R. This is when you use your favourite replenishing mask. A perfect weekly treatment to get your skin back to its best. It is important to find a mask that works best for your skin type. If your skin is on the oilier side, you may prefer a clay mask. And if your skin is on the drier side like me, you want a mask that is hydrating and has nourishing ingredients like peptides, ceramides and hyaluronic acid.
Look Inward
Good-looking skin starts from within. So of course the final step for a skin reset is checking in with what you are putting into your body. Make sure you are drinking enough water, taking a good probiotic, and eating whole foods, fruits and vegetables in your diet will help make your skin happy again!
