From chlorine and salt water to UV Rays, summer can really take a toll on our hair, leaving it dry and brittle with little to no definition. But don’t worry, I am going to share some tips to help get your hair back to looking its best!
Problem: Hair Dry and Crunchy
Salt water can make your hair feel awful, and it is prone to tangling. It is important to wash your hair after every beach day. If you want to take even more precautions to prevent salt water and chlorine from being fully absorbed into your hair, wet your hair completely with water before going swimming. This way, the hair is saturated with water molecules and will absorb less salt water and chlorine.
Problem: Brassiness
Chlorine wreaks havoc on the hair. Especially if you’re a blonde. The chemical dries out the cuticle, creating a more porous and thus more susceptible cuticle to discolouration caused by minerals in water. Choose a clarifying or brightening shampoo that is designed to remove unwanted minerals.
Problem: Curls Losing Definition
Humidity is one of the biggest culprits of curls losing their definition. Curls need a lot of moisture, and the right products can help enhance and define them. Most say to use a microfiber towel, but those are usually made out of polyester and that actually does more damage. I prefer an organic cotton t-shirt towel to absorb any excess water gently. Then apply a generous amount of a curl definition cream or your favourite product of choice. Then let your hair air dry naturally or use a diffuser.
Problem: Constant Frizz
Frizz is caused by hair being dry and trying to seek moisture. The best way is to prevent it from even happening. The more hydrated your hair is, the less likely it is to seek additional moisture. Hair oils are great for nourishing and sealing in moisture.
Problem: Damage and Dehydration
UV exposure can damage the cuticle and break down the natural keratin levels, which can affect hair pigment. Hair colour gets lighter, making it more prone to breakage and dryness. Just as you incorporate an SPF into your daily skincare routine, it’s time to consider adding a UV protector for your hair.
Problem: Losing More Hair Than Usual
There are several factors that can disrupt the hair cycle. From stress and medications to products and hairstyles. Regular exercise and eating a balanced diet can help. Use a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo to avoid stripping your hair of its natural oils. Avoid hot tools and chemical treatments. Also, sleep on a silk pillowcase to minimize friction.
Problem: Greasy Scalp
Scalp-creating oil is normal, but sometimes it becomes imbalanced and overproduces oil. The only fix is to use a targeted shampoo to treat the imbalance. Regular washing is absolutely key for keeping that oil at bay.
